Black Enough Season: Belle (12A)

Welcome to a specially curated season of four films presented by Josh Toussaint-Strauss. The season is supported by funds from the BFI FAN Film Exhibition Fund. The second film of the season is the costume drama Belle.

Belle follows the story of the illegitimate daughter of a navy admiral as she is trained and brought up by her aristocratic uncle and his wife. The film follows her poignant journey as she leads the charge to abolish slavery in England.

A Message From Josh Toussaint-Strauss:

Belle is a rare example of a British costume drama with a black female lead, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, and also directed by a black woman, Amma Asante. Asante proved that there is no reason to exclude Black characters from a retelling or an imagining of British history. She deftly exposes the racism and inequality in the British film industry by showing that Black britons are central to the country's history, with many compelling and inspiring stories to be told.

It was mentioned as an example of this in the episode of Black Enough entitled ‘Why are period dramas so white?’
