Black Enough Season: Eve's Bayou (15)

Welcome to a specially curated season of four films presented by Josh Toussaint-Strauss. The season is supported by funds from the BFI FAN Film Exhibition Fund. The first film of the season is the American horror drama Eve’s Bayou.

Over the course of a long, hot Louisiana summer, 10 year old Eve Batiste discovers that her family’s affluent existence is merely a facade. The philandering of her suave doctor father creates a rift, throwing Eve's mother and teenage sister into emotional turmoil. Eve, though, manages to find some solace with her quirky psychic aunt.

A Message From Josh Touss Brand About This Film

Eve’s Bayou is an example of a film that positively portrays the lives of black people in late 60s Louisiana and thoughtfully portrays the religion of Louisiana Voodoo in a respectful and holistic way. I have a personal connection to the film as well. I watched it as a young teen and found the representation of black families incredibly poignant and moving. It resonated with me in a way I hadn’t felt before. Something about the decadence and normality of their lives. And the fun and inquisitive perspective of the main protagonist, Eve. It remains one of my all time favorite films
