Hippodrome Talk - Whisky Galore

It was on 5 February 1941 that the cargo ship SS Politician ran aground off Eriskay, its consignment of over 250,000 bottles of whisky, washed ashore and rescued by locals.

We will once again be remembering this incident with a special talk by Keith Hewitt followed later in the week by a one-off screening of the film inspired by the sinking, Whisky Galore (1949).

Keith Hewitt, is the owner of the largest collection of artefacts associated with the affectionately named “Polly” and the film. The collection includes several bottles salvaged off the wreck and the infamous Jamaican shillings.

Keith has been presenting the true story of the SS Politician for almost a decade to audiences as far away as New Zealand. Keith says, “Without question this is one of the best venues I’ve attended.”

Whisky Galore! (1949) will be screening on Saturday 20th January.
