1968. Director: George A. Romero. Runtime: 103min.
This Halloween, step into the Hippodrome for a cult classic that changed the face of horror — and still refuses to rest in peace — George A. Romero’s relentless, atmospheric descent into fear and survival.
Romero co-wrote the film with John A. Russo, loosely based on Richard Matheson’s 1954 novel 'I Am Legend'. It was followed by another five zombie movies, all directed by Romero, and is generally regarded as the beginning of a new era in horror films, inspiring the likes of John Carpenter, Sam Raimi and others.
An assortment of people flee a group of marauding flesh-eating undead monsters, and become holed up in an isolated farmhouse, barricading themselves in and fighting off the advancing horde with a single shotgun. “If you want to see what turns a B movie into a classic … don’t miss 'Night of the Living Dead'. It is unthinkable for anyone seriously interested in horror movies not to see it” (critic Rex Reed).
