Catch up
The easiest way to catch up with previous HippFest at Home video content is to watch the playlist available on the Falkirk Leisure & Culture YouTube channel. This features previously broadcasted talks, lectures and conversations which are still available to view online. If you prefer, you can also look at the videos available via our Facebook page.
Prefer to read about silent film? Why not explore our dedicated blog, or catch up on the programme notes from previous iterations of the Hippodrome Silent Film Festival? We welcome submissions of relevant writing so please do get in touch if you have an idea for an article, or something already completed that may be of interest to our audiences.
Frequently asked questions
How do I watch a live-stream?
To tune in live, please book an e-ticket via the relevant Box Office listing. The automatic ticket with QR code can be discarded, this is a consequence of the in-person box office system and cannot be removed. All our online events require a digital device with internet access. The live-stream will be broadcast via YouTube. You will be sent a private viewing link on the day of the event. If you have not received a viewing link23 hours before the event is due to start, please get in touch with christina.webber@falkirk.gov.uk
How long are the online events available to watch?
Online premieres of pre-recorded content will remain online permanently after the advertised start time. Tuning in to the premiere when it launches means you’ll be one of the first to view these insightful conversations/events and can react to the content in the live chat box with other online viewers.
Live-streams will broadcast live at the advertised event times. Due to licensing requirements it is unlikely that these will be made available to view retrospectively after the event, so make sure to book a ticket if you want to tune in.
We recommend tuning in live in case you'd like to leave a comment or join the discussion alongside the screening. Unless otherwise stated, if you are unavailable at the advertised event time, live events will remain online for a further 48 hours after live broadcast. Please note however that all tickets still need to be booked before the event.
Can I watch an event more than once?
Yes, please do! A variety of our online events are available to watch via a YouTube playlist on the Falkirk Leisure and Culture channel, or via the HippFest Facebook page. Events listed as 'live-streams' will only be broadcast live at the advertised start times, so to avoid missing out please book a ticket.
Can I watch online events from anywhere in the world, and which devices can I use?
Yes. Unless otherwise stated, our HippFest at Home events can be accessed from any location, as long as you have a digital device with an internet connection and online access to YouTube, Facebook, and/or Zoom. The platforms required to tune in are detailed on each event. You can view our online events on a variety of devices including a laptop, desktop computer, tablet, smart phone or television which supports browser-based viewing.
Will the online content be captioned or signed?
All our spoken word events feature English closed captions. These can be accessed via the ‘CC’ icon, a button on the video player which allows you to switch captions on or off. Some silent films contain intertitles. When these are not in English, English surtitles are provided. We will also provide BSL-English interpretation on all of our online content where possible.
Do I need a Facebook account to take part?
No, you are not required to have a social media account to participate. Whilst we encourage silent film fans to join the HippFest at Home Facebook Group, and/or the online HippFest Hub, this is optional.
Will my face or details be visible during the online Q&A events?
No, only those advertised to be taking part in the Q&A will be visible. Audience members will not have their cameras or microphones on, but will have a chance to ask questions by typing them via the ‘chat’ function.
How do I ask a question in a Q&A?
Q&As are held via Zoom, or live via YouTube. You can download Zoom for free here. During the Q&A, a dialogue box will appear prompting you to submit your question to the panel. On YouTube, you will be able to submit comments. These will then be reviewed by the HippFest team before being presented to participants. Due to time constraints we cannot guarantee that every question will be answered, but we will endeavour to voice as many contributions as possible. You can also submit your question in advance - just email hippfest@falkirk.gov.uk.
I have a question, how can I get in touch?
If you have a question about your ticket/s, making donations, access requirements, the mailing list or refunds please contact the Falkirk Council Box Office on 01324 506850 or if you have a question for the HippFest team specifically, please email hippfest@falkirk.gov.uk. We are a small team but will get back to you as quickly as we can (if you are getting in touch outside of the UK, please bear in mind a difference in time zones). If more convenient, you can also message HippFest on any of our social media platforms, which are listed below.
Where is the Hippodrome Cinema?
The Hippodrome is Scotland’s number one ‘destination’ cinema and winner of Best Cinema Experience in Scotland 2019. Built in 1912 by local businessman Louis Dickson, and widely regarded as Scotland’s oldest purpose-built cinema, it sits in the town of Bo’ness (short for Borrowstounness but always known by its shortened name) on the Firth of Forth between Edinburgh and Glasgow.
Bo’ness has a wonderful community spirit, which can be seen during the Festival when local shops and businesses warmly welcome our audiences and dress the town by competing in our shop window competition. We’re lucky to have as neighbours the Bo’ness and Kinneil Railway, which hosts our ever-popular Platform Reels screenings, and the Barony Players who also welcome our audiences into their delightful home each year.
