Hippodrome Bo’ness to launch captioned screenings for D/deaf and hard-of-hearing
From October 2018 the Hippodrome Cinema will be introducing screenings with captions for D/Deaf and hard-of-hearing audiences.
From October 2018 the Hippodrome Cinema will be introducing screenings with captions for D/Deaf and hard-of-hearing audiences.
Captioning is a service for D/deaf and hard-of-hearing audience members who rely on subtitling to enable them to follow the film’s dialogue. The on-screen captions communicate all audio information, including sound effects, a speaker’s identity, and non-speech elements.
“A number of people have expressed a preference for this addition to our Hippodrome offering and now that we have two extra screening slots a week we’re in a position to introduce this improved provision.” said Hippodrome programmer Alison Strauss (Arts Development Officer, Falkirk Community Trust).
“An astonishing 945,000 people in Scotland are deaf or have hearing loss –1 in 6 of our population – so it is high time we made this change” Alison said.
Captioned screenings will be presented on selected titles (subject to availability) and selected screenings, and will be clearly marked in the programme. The first screening with captions will be The Children Act starring Emma Thompson and Stanley Tucci, on Fri 5th October at 5pm. Other captioned screenings this month are King of Thieves and The Wife.
Remember too that selected films are available with Audio Description (marked AD in the programme) for partially sighted or blind people (AD headphones are available to collect from Box Office when you pick up your tickets).
