Godzilla (1954) (PG) 70th Anniversary

Saturday, 16 Nov 24 at 16:00 p.m.

After a dinosaur-like beast - awoken from undersea hibernation by atom bomb testing - ravages Tokyo, a scientist must decide if his similarly dangerous weapon should be used to destroy it.

The Hippodrome is excited to welcome Steven Sloss to introduce our screening of GODZILLA (1954) on Saturday 16 November at 16:00. Steven has been a fan and scholar of kaiju cinema since he saw Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah at the age of seven. He has written on the subject for Arrow Films, BFI, the Barbican Centre, Glasgow Film Festival, and more, and is the former co-host of the AV Club-featured Kaijusaurus Podcast. He posts on X (formerly Twitter) at @steven_sloss. E-mail him at stevensloss@hotmail.co.uk.

Introducing the afternoon classic film screening of GODZILLA plus the evening showing of GODZILLA MINUS ONE/MINUS COLOUR, Steven will discuss Godzilla's enduring cultural legacy, the social and political climates of its origins, the production of both films, and much more, in this very special double feature of the King of the Monsters' first and most recent Japanese-produced features.
