Clergymen in Ireland were prolific amateur filmmakers - often enjoying the rare privilege of being able to afford the cameras and paraphernalia required to document the ordinary lives of their parishioners. Many of these films, documenting Irish society from the 1930s to the ‘90s from a unique perspective, have been preserved in the IFI Irish Film Archive. IFI Head of Irish Film Programming: Sunniva O’Flynn will take us through some of the collection’s silent highlights, on a journey from the Aran Islands to the tenements of Dublin, for a colourful glimpse of schoolyards, summer fairs, holy communions and religious processions, all seen through the frame of the Father.
About the speaker:
Sunniva O’Flynn is Head of Irish Film Programing in the Irish Film Institute where she looks after curation of content and contexts for new and archival Irish film in IFI, nationally and internationally. Her training in the BFI Film Archive and the Bundesarchiv, Koblenz, combined with an extensive knowledge of Irish film history, stemming from many years in the IFI Irish Film Archive, informs her programming practice.

You also have the option to book a ticket in advance, in order to have the relevant viewing link sent to you via email on the day of the premiere. Viewers tuning is at this time will be able to pose questions via the chat box if they wish, to which the speaker will respond live via text.
This illustrated presentation is available to online audiences free of charge, and will remain available as part of our library of online content.

We rely on our box office income, grants and sponsorship for more than 80% of HippFest costs and invest all of the income generated by ticket sales back into the Festival.
