Hippodrome Talk - Shipbuilding

Wednesday, 14 Feb 24 at 11:00 AM
Join guest speaker Geoff Bailey as he takes us from wood to steel, from Bronze Age log boats to diesel motor vessels via steamships, the Falkirk district housed many boatbuilding yards at places such as Airth, Grangemouth, Carronshore and Bo’ness. By hard graft the workmen constructed a huge range of vessels keeping commerce flowing. At times of war they kept the nation alive. In the First World War they built the so-called “mystery ships” and in the Second World War the Flower Class corvettes. They kept abreast of the latest technology, often leading the field with such ships as the Charlotte Dundas – the world’s first practical steamship.
