The Red Shoes (1948) + Q&A + Chocolate Tasting Kit

Select your film tickets online and then add the Chocolate Tasting Experience to your basket before check-out.

The Hippodrome is proud to present The Red Shoes followed by a Pamela Hutchinson Q&A and featuring an exclusive Taste Along chocolate experience.

A young ballerina is torn between love and art in this glorious Technicolor masterpiece, lauded by Martin Scorsese as ‘one of the true miracles of film history’. Boasting Oscar-winning sets and music, only the big screen can truly do it justice.

Insisting the female lead be played by a real dancer rather than using a double, Powell and Pressburger catapulted Moira Shearer to fame. She is bewitching as Vicky Page, the young rising star driven to breaking point by a ruthless impresario when she is cast as the lead in his production of The Red Shoes. The film features an unforgettable 20-minute ballet performance, paving the way for the iconic dance sequences in An American in Paris, Singin in the Rain and La La Land.

One of the most influential films ever made, The Red Shoes has moulded the work of Martin Scorsese, Wes Anderson, Pedro Almodóvar, Joanna Hogg, Francis Ford Coppola, Spike Lee and Steven Spielberg to name but a few. Its influence extends beyond the big screen, inspiring authors, musicians and artists including Anne Rice, Margaret Atwood, Kate Bush and Matthew Bourne.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Pamela Hutchinson, author of a new book on The Red Shoes, which delves into the inspirations and creative energy behind the film and explores what makes the story of ballerina Vicky Page so fascinating, and even dangerous, as well as an inspiration to generations of young people.  The Q&A will be chaired by Camilla Baier of Invisible Women – an archive activist film collective which champions the work of woman and filmmakers with marginalised identities from the history of cinema.

Local independent Bo’ness bookshop Inkspot & Silverleaf will have a pop-up stall at the Hippodrome this evening, selling copies of Pamela Hutchinson’s new book BFI Film Classics: The Red Shoes (RRP £12.99. Special Offer: £11.50. Cash and card payments accepted. Note: Opting to pay by cash rather than credit card helps support small local businesses). Pamela will be available to sign your copy.
